USA WEST

In only 13 hours LUFTHANSA'S brought us at the beginning of of June 98 of Vienna via Munich TO San Francisco. Probably as punishment for the landing come prematurely our airbus had to drive 1 hour around at the airfield. Since we already showed our passports in Munich at the “Blue Lane” switch, the customs clearance was very fast. The ordered borrowing cars was not available and therefore made themselves we in the jeep Wrangler on the journey. At the Hwy 1 we drive the beautiful rock coast Pacific direction the south and visit the lock of a billionaire (Hearst Castle). We reach VISALIA very late. In the Sequoia NP we enjoy the fantastic view on snow-covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada. We mount the Moro skirt, observe bears, wander through and umwandern the enormous Sequoias (9 m diameters). A side street leads us between snow walls to a mountain lake in the Kings Canyon NP.

The next morning is boring, but the luxuriösen rooms in the “pyramid” (55$) and the strains of the 386 miles (618 km) leave the excellent Buffet by the Mojave desert to READ VEGAS fast to forget. We have even still time for a city tour, which particularly makes much joy in the open jeep. On the second day a short rainstorm brings a cooling of 20°C - oh as beautiful - in the morning had we with the Hoover dam still to 45°. The Luxor hotel is easy to find, but can our room, one of 4500, only over erring ways be attained past at thousands of play automats. A lighter detour leads us over “more silver road” the “route 66” legendary by lonely area to the original remainders. Flagstaff serves us as basis for the Grand Canyon attendance.

Now further to Mexican have, naturally drive on we also the 17 Miles drive in the Navajo are national Monument Valley. It continues to go over the only 4 States of corner (four corners) to CORTES. The attendance of Mesa Verde was really worthwhile itself. The Anasasi Indian selected itself a beautiful landscape for its houses built into the steep wall. Mesa Verde was our easternmost goal and now drives we again direction nature. MOAB is our next goal. In the ARCHES NP we drive on also the western, fastened road. This way should be driven on from the north to the south and the entry requires 4 WD a vehicle. We need a whole day for “potash road”, the “shepherd Canyon”, “Gooseneck overlook”, “Muselman arch” (to the “White Rim Road”), “Iceland in The Sky”, “Grand View”, “green more river overlook”, “Deadhorse POINT overlook” (5$ pay). The return trip is made by the adventurous “Long Canyon”. Sandig, with some Felsbrocken, goes it steeply downhill and to the Colorado has us again. 4x4 very recommendable.

Unfortunately I do not have much time for the “Slickrocks” into Moab any longer and we to drive to the “Needles”. The old road to the “Elephant Hill” is in a so bad condition that only isolated pieces of bitumen let the road process suspect. We turn thus and procure ourselves around 5$ permission for driving on “salt Canyon”. We drive most time thereby on soft sand or in the water by sumptuous vegetation. In the late afternoon we leave the “Needles NP” and drive to BLANDING. Overnight accomodation in the recommendable “Prospector engine Lodge”. Retrospectively we must say that for only one day the long detour is not worth to the “Needles” and one should take at least one camping night into account.

At the way after HANKSVILLE we visit the “Natural Bridges” and “Lake Powell”. In the afternoon we visit the merry “Goblins Valley”. Since I do not indicate distinguished pillion passenger a crossing to mine, we miss the way back after Hanksville and land in a drained river course. 2 meters among us we see the sun already close on the horizon to tread marks stand however there, decide we to turn. We had always approx. 8 litres water, satellite navigation and radio in the car; but one must die no unnecessary risk. Hanksville has however still two surprises for us ready. First of all the worst meal and secondly we forgot our “chest bag” in the motel. And now to the good one. Our money found the chambermaid and was otherwise distinguished the food supply in America. Excluded a “Gravy Sauce”. The travel over Hwy 24 and Hwy 12 via “Capitol Reef NP” is beautiful. An absolute high point is the varied Highway number 12. Two overnight accomodation in TROPIC. Daily trip to all lookout points of the “Bryce Canyon” and mi
gration at the “Bryce POINT” and in the “Navajo Canyon” (Navajo Trail - an absolute must).

The next daily stage leads after us SPRINGDALE. The short detour over “Pink Coral sand Dunes State park” was really worthwhile itself. To move fun makes the jeep on the Sanddünen powerful. The morning migration in the cold “Virgin River” brings me to the bottlenecks of the “Zion Canyon”. Soon however the thermometer to 45°C and we rise decide to visit the ZION NP from above to. To the “lava POINT” 2450 m lie highly, the climate are fantastic and the seas, Wasserfälle and become green Getreidefelder please the eye. Now we refuel energy for the tomorrow's daily stage; “Death Valley”. The temperature range extends again from 27°C (jump Mountain) to 49° (FURNACE GREEK RANCH). We have courage and to switch the air conditioning system out. The wind hurts, the impressions is enormous. Golf course of the devil, Dantes View, Zabriskie POINT.

Now it becomes fast coolly. Our next night camp is in BISHOP. Trip to the “Sabrina Lake”. We see snow up to the water. A beautiful motorway leads us at the east slope of the “Sierra Nevada” to LEE VINING. The olympia city “Mammoth Lakes” with the Snow board” driving pleased us very much. An orbiting of the “mono Lakes” fails, since many meltwaters floods the fastened dirt road again and again. We see the Tufa of stones however nevertheless. “Bodie” is fascinating and the approach road over the side street is not as wild as beschildert.

Thank God. The Tioga passport is now free of snow (yesterday it was still closed) and we drive by the Yosemite NP to the lookout point “Glacier POINT” - must! We break the night camp open in GROVELAND. Groveland is still like the spirit city Bodie, but with (Ur) inhabitants. Here one should book a hotel in advance.

The last daily stage leads us via San Raffael bridge, fair fax, Olema, Stinson Beach into the north of San Francisco. The north entry over “golden the gate Bridge” to San Francisco is indescribably beautiful. The three weeks are, my wife now past visited now some days San Francisco and I start my expedition - the RUBICON TRAIL.
